Adrienne Arsenault and Beverly Thomson to co-host A Night to Honour Courageous Reporting
TORONTO - On December 4, Canadian Journalists for Free Expression (CJFE) will host its 16th annual gala. Four journalists will be honoured with International Press Freedom Awards: Dessale Berekhet Abraham, Mebrahtu Teclesion Berhe and Ruth Zecarias Ghebre from Eritrea, and Ahmet Şik from Turkey. Bob Thomson, from Canada, will receive CJFE’s Integrity Award.
The gala, hosted by CBC’s Adrienne Arsenault and CTV’s Beverly Thomson, celebrates the work of individuals who risk their jobs, freedom or even their lives in their quest to bring us the truth. The night honours journalists working under repressive regimes who bring to light critically important stories, as well as whistleblowers who act in the public interest by speaking out against dangerous, unethical or illegal practices they uncovered in the course of doing their jobs.
Also featured at this year’s gala is a photo exhibit examining everyday life in Belarus, a country rarely viewed in such intimate detail. The pictures were part of Belarus Press Photo, an annual independent photography competition. The organizers of the competition and one of its winning photographers, were arrested on charges that the Exhibit was “extremist” and deemed to “insult the national honour and dignity of the citizens.” With the generous support of Photo Exhibit co-sponsors Henry’s and the Toronto Star, CJFE is delighted to present this exclusive exhibit on December 4.
