Dear President Erdoğan,
CJFE is concerned by the crackdown on Turkish media that is seen as critical of the government in the lead up to Turkey’s November 1st election. On October 28, Turkish police raided and seized the headquarters of Koza-Ipek, a media group owned by an ally of Fethullah Gulen, the U.S.-based leader of the Hizmet movement and a rival of President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan.
CJFE condemns the recent arrests of three journalists in Egypt. Hisham Jaafar, Hussam el-Sayed, and Mahmoud Mostafa Saad were all arrested within a span of five days. The whereabouts of El-Sayed and Saad are currently unknown.
This letter of concern was sent to His Excellency Kamrul Ahsan, High Commissioner for Bangladesh in Canada.
I am writing on behalf of Canadian Journalists for Free Expression (CJFE), a non-profit, non-governmental organization that works to promote and protect press freedom and freedom of expression around the world.
Every day, citizens, journalists, artists and activists are harassed, tortured and killed for expressing themselves. Nearly 700 journalists have been killed in the past decade for doing their job. In 9 out of 10 of these cases, no one has been convicted.
This leads to a culture of impunity where critical voices are silenced and citizens are denied accurate information about the societies in which they live.
